MP4: The Universal Video Container

MP4 is the most widely used video container format on the internet. It is based on Apple's QuickTime format and was standardized as ISO/IEC 14496-14 in 2003. MP4 typically contains H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, but can hold virtually any codec. It supports streaming via fragmented MP4 (fMP4), used by DASH and HLS adaptive streaming. MP4 is the default output format for most video encoding tools and the required format for HTML5 video playback.
