MKV: The Flexible Video Container
Matroska (MKV) was created in 2002 as an open alternative to proprietary container formats. Named after Russian nesting dolls, it can contain virtually any combination of video, audio, subtitle, and attachment tracks. MKV supports chapters, menus, metadata, and embedded fonts. It is the preferred format for high-quality video archival and distribution, supporting every major codec from H.264/H.265 to AV1. WebM is a subset of MKV designed specifically for the web.
