AVIF

Definition

AV1 Image File Format: a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers superior compression over JPEG and WebP with support for HDR, wide color gamut, and transparency.

AVIF: Next-Generation Image Compression

AVIF was standardized in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media. Based on the AV1 video codec's intra-frame compression, it achieves 50% better compression than JPEG and 20% better than WebP at equivalent quality. AVIF supports 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, HDR, wide color gamut (P3, Rec. 2020), transparency, and animation. It is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. AVIF is rapidly becoming the preferred format for web images alongside WebP, particularly for photographs where its compression advantage is most pronounced.
